Agora was, for much of its life, the most trusted large darknet market — and its voluntary shutdown in 2015 made it a rarity: a major market that neither exit-scammed nor was seized.

History

Agora launched in 2013 and grew as Silk Road collapsed and Evolution rose. It built a reputation for conservative administration: no aggressive marketing, careful vendor vetting and strong operational security.

Operation

Agora was considered a stable venue for high-value trades. In 2014 and 2015 it and Evolution alternated as the largest market. When Evolution exit-scammed, displaced users and vendors moved to Agora, briefly making it the clear market leader.

Shutdown

In August 2015 Agora announced it was shutting down voluntarily, citing "security concerns" — widely read as fear of an impending seizure. Its administrators disappeared cleanly and never returned.

Legacy

Agora is often cited as the model of a "good" exit: orderly, announced and without an exit scam, in stark contrast to Evolution. Its example set the standard users hoped later markets would follow.
