AlphaBay was the largest darknet market of its generation — not just for drugs but for stolen data, fraud services and counterfeit goods. Its July 2017 takedown, coordinated with the seizure of Hansa, remains a landmark of international cyber-policing.

History

Founded by Canadian Alexandre Cazes ("Alpha02"), AlphaBay launched in late 2014 and rose as Evolution and Agora exited the stage. By 2016 it was the default destination for a broad slice of darknet commerce, with estimates of over 200,000 users and more than a billion dollars in lifetime sales.

Operation

AlphaBay's success came from breadth. Alongside controlled substances it hosted stolen credit card data, hacked accounts, fraud tutorials and other services. Its scale made it a top law-enforcement priority for years.

Downfall

In July 2017, U.S. and Thai authorities seized AlphaBay's servers and arrested Cazes, who died in custody while awaiting trial. In the same operation, Dutch police seized Hansa and quietly ran it for a month to harvest user data. The coordinated AlphaBay–Hansa operation became a template for future takedowns.

Legacy

AlphaBay's fall did not reduce darknet demand; it redistributed it, mostly to Dream Market and then to a cascade of successors. Its story is the clearest demonstration that market share is a liability as much as an asset.
