Darknet Forums: Educational Overview of Tor Communities
Darknet forums are anonymous discussion boards inside the Tor network. This guide explains what they are, how they differ from surface-web forums, which communities exist, and the safety risks involved — with sources, no .onion links, and no instructions for illegal activity.
What are darknet forums?
Darknet forums are anonymous, Tor-based discussion boards where users can post text, share information and vote on content without revealing their identity. They function similarly to Reddit or other surface-web forums, but are reachable only through the Tor Browser and require no email, phone number or personal information to register.
The best-known example is Dread, launched in 2018 and often described as the "Reddit of the darknet." Darknet forums host communities ("subdreads" or similar) dedicated to markets, security, privacy tools, news and harm reduction.
How darknet forums differ from surface-web forums
| Feature | Surface-web forum | Darknet forum |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Any browser, indexed by search engines | Tor Browser only, not indexed by Google/Bing |
| Registration | Often email, phone or social login | No personal information required |
| Anonymity | IP logged, identifiable by provider | IP hidden by Tor, server location hidden |
| Content moderation | Terms of service, corporate oversight | Community moderation, varies by forum |
| Stability | High uptime, professional hosting | Volatile, mirrors change, downtime common |

Darknet-related legacy forums
Earlier forums that preceded Dread, some seized by law enforcement or closed voluntarily. Studied for historical context only.
Risks of using darknet forums
- Phishing clones: fake mirrors designed to steal login credentials and PGP keys.
- Scams and impersonation: fraudulent vendors, fake market representatives and identity theft.
- Malware: malicious files or links shared in posts and private messages.
- Law-enforcement attention: accessing darknet services may draw scrutiny depending on your jurisdiction.
