Active

Kraken is one of the largest active darknet markets of the mid-2020s, having grown rapidly after Hydra's fall by offering Monero-only payments and modern security.

History

Launched in 2023, Kraken filled part of the gap left by Hydra's seizure, attracting vendors and buyers across international listings. It quickly became one of the most-traded markets among English-speaking users.

Operation

Kraken uses Monero as its primary currency, multi-sig escrow and strict vendor requirements. Its rapid growth has also made it a target for DDoS attacks and increased scrutiny.

Current status

As of the mid-2020s Kraken is widely cited among the most active web-based markets, alongside RAMP and the newer generation of venues such as Nexus and DrugHub. Its long-term fate will depend on its ability to avoid the mistakes of its predecessors.

Legacy

Kraken's success illustrates the modern market template: privacy-first payments, mid-size scale and high security. It represents the current generation of markets that replaced the giants of the past.
