Silk Road was the first modern darknet market and the site that defined the format: a Tor hidden service, Bitcoin payments, central escrow and a vendor rating system. For two and a half years it was the largest and most influential marketplace on the darknet.

History

Launched in February 2011 by Ross Ulbricht, who operated under the pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts," Silk Road grew from a niche curiosity into a global marketplace. Ulbricht modeled it on a libertarian ideal of voluntary commerce, and its design deliberately echoed legal marketplaces: product categories, reviews, vendor levels and dispute resolution.

Operation

Buyers and sellers connected through Tor, which concealed their IP addresses. Payments were held in Bitcoin escrow and released only after a buyer confirmed delivery. At its peak Silk Road had well over a million customer accounts and is estimated to have processed about 1.2 billion dollars in sales, mostly controlled substances but also digital goods and services.

Downfall

The FBI traced Silk Road's server to a hosting provider in Iceland and identified Ulbricht through a trail of operational mistakes and digital breadcrumbs. He was arrested in October 2013 and the market was seized. In 2015 Ulbricht was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, making the case a landmark in the debate over anonymity, encryption and platform liability.

Legacy

Silk Road's template — escrow, reputation and onion service — was copied by every major market that followed. Its takedown also proved that large darknet economies would not simply disappear: operators and vendors relaunched within days, beginning the takedown-and-rebirth cycle that defines the industry.
