White House Market became famous for two things: accepting only Monero, and shutting down voluntarily in October 2021 with its reputation intact.
Reddit hosts detailed and up-to-date information about the darknet: community discussions, news and in-depth material on darknet markets, Tor, privacy and online security. Follow the link below for more detailed information.
History
Launched in 2019, White House Market (WHM) rose as Empire collapsed. Its insistence on Monero-only payments made it a magnet for privacy-conscious vendors and buyers.
Operation
WHM stood out for strict operational discipline: no aggressive advertising, mandatory PGP for vendors, and — crucially — no record of ever being breached. Its administrators announced the shutdown in advance, gave users time to withdraw, and closed without an exit scam.
Closure
In October 2021 the market announced it would shut down and stopped accepting new registrations. Users were given a window to settle balances, and the market then disappeared cleanly.
Legacy
White House Market showed that a darknet market could end responsibly. Its closure contributed to the industry's shift toward smaller, Monero-based markets and to the consolidation that followed the fall of the big platforms.
